Pediatric Physical Therapy
Dr. Howard Liss treats disorders that cause pain and disability by providing consultative services and soft tissue and joint injections when needed. When medically appropriate, he makes specific referrals for diagnostic testing (lab work, imaging, electrodiagnosis), physical and occupational therapy, interventional procedures (epidurals and facet joint injections), and surgery. When children are stricken with disease, injury or a particular disorder that impairs their ability to function physically, pediatric physical therapy plays a vital role in preserving and enhancing their movement and range of motion. With a combined effort, physiatrists coordinate selective treatments on a case-by-case basis for children that are then carried out by a team of medical professionals including physical and occupational therapists, clinicians and interventionists.
Physiatrists diagnose, develop protocols, prescribe medication, perform assessments and consult with other physicians as needed in order to deliver effective and individualized physical therapyfor children. Essentially, physiatrists become the liaison for children and their family, providing both with insight needed for continued care to maximize functioning.
A number of methods are used in pediatric physical therapy including:
- Strengthening exercise
- Stretching
- Heat or ice therapy
- Ultrasound therapy
- Electrical stimulation
- Traction
- Taping, bracing and splinting
- Joint mobilization
- Phonophoresis (delivering medication to underlying skin tissues)
Specialized therapy and care are provided for children with the following conditions:
- Brain injuries
- Burns
- Cerebral palsy
- Developmental delays
- Diabetes
- Genetic disorders
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Neuromuscular conditions
- Orthopedic disorders
- Sports injuries
