Physical Therapy for Seniors

Dr. Howard Liss treats disorders that cause pain and disability by providing consultative services and soft tissue and joint injections when needed. When medically appropriate, he makes specific referrals for diagnostic testing (lab work, imaging, electrodiagnosis), physical and occupational therapy, interventional procedures (epidurals and facet joint injections), and surgery.

Designed to improve the functional independence of seniors, physical therapy is a critical component helping seniors recover from surgery, stay active, prevent injury and develop improved balance and coordination.

Comprehensive rehabilitation, as designed by a physiatrist, incorporates the expertise of several specialists including physical and occupational therapists, clinicians and interventionists. In turn, effective therapy combines multiple modalities, including evaluation, education and treatment for seniors that are deconditioned, as well as those having experienced the following:

  • Orthopedic disorders
  • Stroke
  • Arthritis
  • Vestibular disorders
  • Gait disorders
  • Spatial disorientation
  • Balance disorders
  • Osteoporosis

While physical therapy provides obvious benefits in terms of strength and conditioning, it proves invaluable in reducing the risk of a fall, decreasing pain from chronic conditions and lessening the need for prescription medications.

Types Of Physical Therapy for Seniors

  • Geriatric physical therapy – with an emphasis on the changing needs of aging adults with osteoporosis, arthritis, cancer, joint replacement and balance disorders. Selective protocols are developed to restore mobility, increase the patient’s fitness level and manage pain
  • Orthopedic physical therapy – designed to rehabilitate injuries of the musculoskeletal system, including restoring function to bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons
  • Cardiopulmonary physical therapy – with a focus on endurance and functional independence, cardiopulmonary physical therapy usually follows a heart attack, pulmonary fibrosis or heart disease
  • Neurological physical therapy – for conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease or ALS, neurological physical therapy helps patients adjust to changes in visual, mobility, balance and muscle tone that makes daily activities difficult
