Modifications To Help Ease Your Piriformis Syndrome Pain

Piriformis syndrome results in deep aching pain in your buttocks hip and down your leg and foot. Piriformis syndrome is an irritation or compression of your sciatic nerve in your gluteal region. The pain, numbness, tingling or weakness usually shoots down through your buttock and into your leg or foot.

Piriformis syndrome often arises from poor movement patterns and posture. Making small modifications to these habits may help ease your pain that you’re experiencing related to your Piriformis syndrome.

  • Don’t sit for long periods of time with you wallet in your back pocket. If you need to sit for a long period of time on a hard surface, use a flat pillow or blanket to cushion your buttocks.
  • Choose anti-inflammatory foods. Eat a nutrient-dense, low-processed diet. Limit sugar, alcohol and packaged snacks. This will help you maintain a healthy weight.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Maintain a healthy exercise and stretching routine.
  • Maintain good posture when you are sitting, driving or standing.
  • Avoid sleeping or sitting in position for a long time in a position that puts too much pressure on your buttocks.
  • Safely lift objects by bending your knees and squatting to pick it up. Avoid a twisting lift.
  • Use a foam roller to reduce your pain. You can use the pressure from the roller to reduce your pain.
  • Apply ice or heat for pain relief.
  • Sleep on your side that is not experiencing pain. Position your knees to 90 degrees. Place a pillow between your knees.
